"The Hungarian" Blog Tour – Stephanie Burkhart

Anne: Joining us today is Stephanie Burkhart, author of "The Hungarian." Welcome back, Steph!

Steph: Anne, I just want to say I'm excited to be here at your blog, the 3rd stop on my blog tour for "The Hungarian." Thank you very much for having me today.

I thought I'd share just a little bio with you before we got to the questions. I was born and raised in Manchester, NH with a hungry appetite for reading gothic romance, especially by Victoria Holt. I served in the Army for 11 years from 1986 to 1997 and spent 7 years in Germany. My time in Europe inspired two passions – my love of history and the paranormal. Currently, I live in California and work for LAPD as a 911 dispatcher.

Beware. The Wolf is coming.

Anne: Where did the inspiration to write "The Hungarian" come from?

Steph: I'm a member on writing.com and I found a contest with a simple prompt: write a romance about a werewolf who falls in love. Out of that prompt grew a short story were a Hungarian Count, Matthias Duma, hires Katherine to be a nanny for his young daughter, Emily. It was well received and I submitted it to the Writer's Digest Popular Fiction contest in the romance category. Out of 3,000 entries, it was selected as an honorable mention. Encouraged, I decided to make the story into a novel.

Anne: What was the road to publication like?

Steph: One pothole after another. My first draft should have stayed in the closet! *grin* The plot wasn't really viable, but it allowed me to get to know the characters. My second draft was more polished with a solid plot. It was written in the first person from Katherine's POV. I showed it to Gail Delaney (editor-in-chief) at Desert Breeze who said, "I like it, but can you write it in the third person?" I did and the result is the current manuscript.

Anne: Do you have advice for aspiring writers after what you've been through?

Steph: Be patient and flexible, but most of all, be willing to take constructive criticism. Be able to step back, and willing to make changes.

Anne: What is "The Hungarian" about?

Steph: It's about the man who is a wolf. Count Matthias Duma, my hero, was attacked by a group of gypsy werewolves near Lake Balaton in Hungary and made into a wolf. He has a staff to help him through the full moon. Resa is a gypsy witch. Lazlo is his faithful friend. The wolves who attacked him killed his then wife, Beth, leaving him to raise his three-year-old daughter, Emily. Matthias believes he doesn't deserve to fall in love again until he meets Katherine. Then he thinks, do I even have a right to make her fall in love with me? I'm a wolf.

Anne: Why did you pick 1901?

Steph: I'm completely fascinated by this time period. Imperialism was in full force throughout Europe. Old world ways collided with new world technology. Automobiles had been invented, the phonograph and telephone were in use, yet radio wasn't in use yet, nor were there airplanes. The "myth" of the werewolf was from the old world, yet it was real and Matthias is proof of it.

Anne: Do you cast your characters?

Steph: I sure do. It helps me to get into "character."

Anne: Who is Matthias? Katherine?

Steph: I love Jonathan Rhys-Meyers work in "The Tudors." He wears nobility well and he has the "eyes" of Matthias. For Katherine, Justine Cotsonas work as "As The World Turns" stood out. Not only that, has the hair for Katherine.

Anne: What makes "The Hungarian" different from other paranormal novels?

Steph: My focus is on the man, not the wolf. How does Matthias handle his condition? Is he bitter? Mean? Moody? Does he bear his condition calmly, with quiet nobility? Dare he fall in love or make a woman fall in love with him knowing what he is? I loved exploring the psyche of the man.

Anne: Is there a sequel?

Steph: You bet! It's called "The Count's Lair" and it's the story of Katherine's friend, Amelia, and Matthias's rival, Count Anton Varga.

Anne: Thanks for stopping by today, Steph. Your book sound fascinating and I love the cover!

Steph: Thanks for having me.

Here’s an excerpt:

She caught his lips with hers. He responded in kind, wrapping his rugged arms around her, holding her tight. They kissed for the longest time, their lips deepening the kisses between them until their tongues began to mingle against each other, yearning with the sensual heat of desire. Katherine felt a deep physical agitation pooling inside her. His full lips tasted sweet, like a sinful treat she could easily become addicted to.

Then, with an abruptness she hadn't expected, he put his hands on her shoulders and broke the kiss with a jerk. "Katherine, do you realize what you're doing?"

"Tell me."

He cupped her cheek, looking at her with a deep intensity that burrowed into her soul. "It's too soon," he whispered.

"Too soon for what?"

"Don't I scare you? The way I look?"

"No."

"My scar? My eyes?"

"Not in the least."

"It doesn't bother you I'm a widower? That the Ashtons are openly seeking to prove me a poor parent so they can take my daughter away from me?"

"No." None of what he'd mentioned bothered her. From what she had observed he was honorable, exuding more nobility than the Ashtons ever would.

Matthias tore himself away from her and left the gazebo. He took long, quick wolverine-like strides toward the roses.

"What are you doing?"

He plucked a rose from a bush without any hesitation and held it up to her. "I love roses, Katherine. They're very soothing to me when I'm alone late at night, trapped by the moon. I want you to have this one. I am not an ordinary courtier, Katherine. I would not woo you with British practicality, but in ways that are foreign to you--"

"What are you saying?"

"If you think you are strong enough, if you think you can endure the summer's challenges, if you think you could find a life with me, then send this rose back in a week's time and I will ask Lord Archibald his permission to court you."

Blog Tour for Be Mused

Today I’m thrilled to be a host for the mini-blog tour for Desert Breeze Publishing’s upcoming Be Mused Anthology. I’ll let the very talented Stephanie Burkhart, one of the authors, tell you all about it.

While the author is away, the muse will play.

I just want to say I'm excited to go on a mini-blog tour in support of the Be Mused Anthology coming out with Desert Breeze Publishing on 1 April 2010. It has five light-hearted short stories about muses, their writers, and love. My thanks to Anne for having me today and for Judah Raine for putting together this tour through Classic Romance Revival.

"Be Mused" has a great line up of authors – J. Morgan, Katie Charles, Me, Nicole Zoltack, and Sandra Sookoo. The premise of the novel is that a writer is a muse's job. Muses exist on another plane. They relax by going to bars and visiting friends. They go to muse conferences and take vacations.

J. Morgan's story "@museD" opens the anthology. Diana is an experienced muse who is assigned to L.B. Daye. The problem arises when L.B. sees Diana in the reflection of his monitor. Both Diana and L.B. freak out and L.B. gets knocked on the head and passes out. Diana stays around to make sure he's okay, but when he comes to, Diana's got a problem. What to do now that L.B. has seen her?

*grin* Just wait till you discover what L.B. stands for.

J's writing is very humorous and I smiled all the way through it. Here's an excerpt:

"What's up, girlfriend?"

Jeze took a slurp on her mango daiquiri and grinned. "The usual. Fighting an endless war against the murky snakes of ill repose."

"Are we playing poker or what?" Blaine snapped, thumping the table with a six-shooter.

"I have a writer's block to bust loose in the morning."

"Chill pill, Blaine." Jeze twisted her finger in the air and rolled her eyes. "Di Di, take this cow down so we can chat."

Blaine leaned across the table. "Yeah, Di Di, take me down."

Diana spread her cards right under Blaine's nose. "Read 'em and weep."

"Three flipping queens!" The other muse snorted and twisted her nose up like Diana had put a hunk of Limburger under her face.

If you post on the blog today, I'll be picking two names out of a hat to win an autographed postcard with the "Be Mused" cover on it, signed by me.

I'll also be offering a grand prize gift bag of "Be Mused" products including a coffee mug, mouse pad, magnet, and autographed postcard to my blog tour winner. In order to qualify for the prize, you have to post on all the blogs in the tour. The prize winner will be announced on 10 April. (I go on vacation from 4-9 April)

Author Interview with Stephanie Burkhart

Please join me in welcoming author, Stephanie Burkhart. Thank you for joining me today, Stephanie. Will you please tell our visitors a little about yourself?

When I was a young girl, my muse came to visit. She was a rambunctious little girl, like me. She liked to read and taught me a love of reading. Some of my favorites were the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew and comic books. In high school, I grew to love Victoria Holt and really gravitated toward romance novels because I liked how their happy ending usually inspired hope in the reader. In 1986, when I was 18, I went into the army. I got out of the army in 1997 and I got a job working at LAPD as a 911 Dispatcher in 2000. I live in Castaic, CA and I have two sons, 7 & 3.

Wow! You were in the army and now a 911 dispatcher. I bet you don’t have any trouble coming up with ideas for your books. Will you tell us how you got started in writing? How difficult was your journey to publication?

In 1986, I decided I wanted a grand adventure and joined the army as an MP. My muse thought it would be cool to go with me. I was sent to Germany. In 1988, I went on the Berlin Orientation Tour when I won soldier of the quarter for my battalion. While my adventure to Berlin was relatively uneventful, my muse recognized its importance. “This is it, Steph - your first novel.”

It took approximately ten years, but “Destination: Berlin,” became my first novel. It was originally published in 2001 by IUniverse. IUniverse is known as a self-publisher, but I enjoyed going with them.

Why don’t you tell us about your newest upcoming release?

I have an upcoming release called “The Hungarian” with Desert Breeze Publishing due out in May 2010. It’s a paranormal romance. The story takes place in Budapest, 1901. My hero, Matthias, has been bitten by a werewolf. Then he meets Katherine and falls in love. I know werewolves aren’t easy to tackle, but what I love about “The Hungarian” is that I explore the psychological aspects of the man during the 26 days of the month that he’s not a wolf.

Sounds fascinating! Where did you come up with the concept for your story?

Steph: Well, I wrote a short story called “The Wolf’s Kiss,” which is a paranormal romance that takes place in Budapest in 1901. I submitted it to the Writer’s Digest Pop Fiction contest and it won an honorable mention in the Romance genre. A lot of people had read the short story and suggested I expand it to make it novel length, which is what I did.

Okay, say you have this great idea for a book, what do you do next? How much plotting do you do?

I make a lose plot, because sometimes the characters take me on a different direction. After a rough outline, then I plot the sections of it. After I write the opening, then I plot the raising action, once that’s done, I adjust to where the characters wanted to take me and I plot the next part.

Do you have a favorite book you’ve written? How about a favorite character?

My favorite book was “The Wolf’s Torment.” “It’s a blend of fantasy, paranormal, and romance genres. Set in Romania in 1866, Crown Prince Mihai Sigmaringen is a boy who must become a man when his best friend, Viktor, is bitten by a werewolf. Having been hurt by his first love, Alexandra, Mihai slowly falls in love with wife, Theresa, as outside forces conspire to keep them apart.

I really liked Mihai, Theresa, and Viktor, but Viktor would have to be my favorite. He’s just an ordinary guy who, after being bitten, slowly loses his humanity. It’s a dynamic change for him that comes about very slowly.

And I thought I had a wild imagination. You’ve got me beat by a long shot. So Steph, what do you like to do for fun?

Haha!! Go to work. Work is where I escape to unwind. I like to watch movies and go work out at the gym.

Do you have a favorite food or snack that you can’t live without?

Well, I’m heading back to weight watchers so right now my favorite snack is grapes. I’ve had a heck of time trying to get the pregnancy weight off from my last son, and he’s 3 now.

What advice can you offer for any aspiring authors out there?

Patience. Writing is 10% writing and 90% editing and you have to be open to the editing process and patience is a big part of that.

Very True Steph. Your books sound wonderful. Where can we purchase them, and do you have a website we can visit?

You can visit http://sgcardin.tripod.com for my official website. You can visit Amazon.com for “Destination:Berlin” and “The Wolf’s Torment” as well as IUniverse.com’s website. “The Hungarian” will be out with Desert Breeze in May 2010 and will be available at their website. Both “Destination:Berlin” and “The Wolf’s Torment,” was published under a pen name, SG Cardin.

Thanks again for joining me today, Steph. I’ve enjoyed getting to know you better and hearing about your wonderful books. Below are some blurbs about Steph's books.
